There is good news for our country in this election year. Currently, 1,280 kilometers of highways and expressways are under construction in Romania, the planning of which began a few years ago. These projects affect more kilometers than all the roads built in the last half century combined. According to Economica.net, 530 kilometers of highways and expressways are currently under construction. Construction is also active on the A1 highway and along the A0 highway that surrounds Bucharest. Work is also underway on the section of the A7 motorway between Ploiești and Pașcani. Another nearly 240 kilometers of expressways are still in the planning phase, so they have not yet reached the ground with a shovel.
The works will start soon. New construction areas are opening, for example, on the A13 highway between Sibiu and Făgăraș. These projects are joined by another 505 kilometers of expressways, which are currently in the public procurement process. Examples include the Arad-Oradea expressway or the Craiova-Târgu Jiu expressway. Economica.net explains that the amount of investments spent on these projects exceeds 113 billion lei. It is the first time that the number of expressways in the public procurement, design or construction phase exceeds the number of expressways that have been opened to traffic in Romania in the last 50 years or so. In total, the projects include 1,280 kilometers of roads, while only 1,115 kilometers of highways and expressways have been opened to traffic since 1972.
