The Ukrainian connection of Diaľnica D1 from Slovakia Peter Kmec, the deputy prime minister responsible for the recovery plan, emphasized that the negotiations between the Ukrainian and Slovak governments are taking place at the highest political level. Kmec talked about significant infrastructure projects aimed at facilitating the border crossing between Slovakia and Ukraine in both directions. These topics are likely to play a central role in the reconstruction of post-war Ukraine, as well as new investments for Slovakia in the eastern part of the country. However, the difficulty is that we do not know when the war will end. Moreover, the construction of new highways can take years, as Slovakia's experience shows, as it is often delayed.
In terms of transport infrastructure, the expansion of the Vyšné Nemecké border crossing is of prime importance, as it is a key hub for passenger and freight traffic. Currently, it is not prepared to handle larger cargo traffic. The expansion of the border crossing is planned, explained Kmec. - The development of the road construction infrastructure is also related to this. We need to build a highway from Kassa to the border crossing, added the Deputy Prime Minister. They count on financing from the European Commission, and Slovakia also wants to use the resources of private investors for the implementation of infrastructure projects. According to Kmec, it will be essential that the projects move forward in parallel, that is, the expansion of the border crossing and the construction of the D1 highway from Kassa to Ukraine. In addition, another important topic is the development and strengthening of rail transport to Ukraine via the Čierna nad Tisou - Csap railway crossing.
