Lately, we often encounter lane closures due to road renovations on the busiest highways. This is part of a comprehensive plan, within the framework of which MKIF Zrt. will bring the expressways taken over from September 1, 2022 to a uniform technical level. More than 500 kilometers will be renewed in three years; now we present what happened this year.
By May of this year, Magyar Koncessziós Infrastructure Fejlsztó Zrt. had replaced the pavement on more than 100 kilometers, 870,000 square meters. Based on the data, work has already been completed on 33 sections on five different expressways (M1, M3, M7, M30, M35). On the M7, five sections totaling 40 kilometers have been renewed since March. A significant renovation of works of art took place here, with the renovation of 18 bridges. During the vacation, between Budapest and Lake Balaton, there will be no planned works this year either. On the M7, the pavement is being replaced on more than 1 million square meters. Renewed sections of the M7: - 8 kilometers between Balatonaliga and Siófok, - 6.5 kilometers in the Kőröshegy area, - 5.3 kilometers near Balatonszemes and Balatonlelle, - 2 kilometers in the Sávoly area, - 8.4 kilometers between Petrivente and Letenye. Eight sections of the M3 highway were renovated in the spring, covering a total of 360,000 square meters, and six bridges were also renovated.
Locations of the works: - 6 kilometers between Füzesabony and Szihalom, - 8 kilometers between Szihalom and Mezőkövesd, - 0.5 kilometers in the area of Szentistván, Mezőkeresztes and Hejőpapi, - 8.5 kilometers between Mezőkeresztes and Gelej, - 10 kilometers between Polgár and Görbeháza, - 4.5 kilometers in the Kálmánháza area. The spring works also affected the M35 motorway: - 5.3 kilometers near Debrecen-Józsa, - 1.4 and 1.3 kilometers at the Debrecen-Ondód exit. On the M1 motorway, works were carried out to a lesser extent already this spring: - 7 kilometers between Bábolna and Bőny, - 0.9 kilometers between Bicske and Óbarok, - Smaller sections in the area of Tata, Kisigmánd and Győr. On the M1 this year, MKIF Zrt. will replace the worn pavement on at least 350,000 square meters, which means approximately 100 lane kilometers. Like last year, the works are organized this year in such a way that there are no planned works in August during the period of greater transit traffic. In 2024, in addition to the M1, M3, M7, M30, and M35, there will be leveling on nine expressways, as well as on various sections of the M4, M8, M15, and M70. The comprehensive program, which is Hungary's largest expressway renovation, began last year.
The renovations will cover 538 kilometers between 2023-2025. Based on the concession contract of MKIF Zrt., some work must be done on 43% of the 1,237 kilometers of expressways. In the first year, the pavement was replaced on 3.6 million square meters, using half a million tons of asphalt. This year, an additional 3.9 million square meters of pavement will be replaced, and 110 bridges may also be renovated. This year, the works may also affect the roads of the rest areas and the ramps of junctions, with periodic closures. MKIF Zrt. regularly informs travelers about current works via ÚTINFORM, its website and Facebook page.
